We went to Felines, Inc., a local no-kill shelter, to look for a kitty.
We have missed having a pet here since Jake and Abby left us.

It's in a regular Chicago two-flat graystone, but it's got 130 kitties inside!
(Oddly, it doesn't smell at all like cats - it's immaculate. But there are kitties running everywhere!)
They told us Orbit had just been dropped off by her foster caregiver 45 minutes before we came in, and that it would be a couple of days before we could take Orbit home as she needed a couple more shots. We were disappointed, but we came home to wait for the call that she was ready to come home.
Lo and behold, less than two hours later, they called and said they were able to get Orbit ready to go sooner than they thought, and that she was ready to come home!
We visited with her for 20 minutes or so while we were there, and she is the sweetest kitty I've ever seen. She just rested on my shoulder like a little baby, purring and being sweet. Mary was excited, and she put her face in Orbit's face and said, "Meoooowwwww!" really loudly, but the cat didn't even flinch. This is a good kitty.
I hope her presence in the house is enough to persuade our little mousie that this isn't the home for him. Seriously, mouse, there are 3 vacant units in this building. Wouldn't that be fun? A vacant unit? Yes, it would!
Lots of people I've talked to and things I've read say that merely having a cat in a home is enough to make mousies go away. Let's hope that happens here, or at least let's hope mousie decides to investigate the humane trap. We set up a video camera last night to watch him and he would go up to the trap, smell it, and go around it. Smart mouse, this guy.

By the way, our cat was about 3 years old when we got her from a no kill shelter too. She was pregnant and had two kittens which got adopted before her. Ken said she was a single mother who got herself in a little trouble :)
And are you going to keep the name Orbit? You're not going to believe what Roofus was named before we got her: Teresa!! When we got home I thought no one named Teresa licks her butt for that many hours/day :)
Well Orbit was at the foster home because she had kittens 9 weeks ago. Now she is hiding under the sofa so I guess it may be a while before I get to spend time with her.

Naw, we will probably change her name. Last night, we were lying in bed trying to figure out why anyone would name a cat "Orbit."
We decided that maybe it was because she was a space cadet, and we both agreed that in that case, "Spacey" would have been the better name.
She is SUCH a good cat - she laid in bed last night and then got up and went pee. Then about an hour later, she got up and went poop. (All IN the litter box!)
She comes when you call and has the cutest meow.
She's not too sure of Mary yet, mostly because Mary is a spazz with a tendency towards loudness. But eventually they'll get along.
